My friend, David Hutama will share his thought in understanding tools of design and production in architecture in OMAH, summer pavilion, here is the notes that I wrote for him for his lecture. I think that the knowledge of tools to design, and a way to understand production is essential for communicating the essence of the design. Without the knowledge of tools and production, architect can’t build his work, express his creativity, connect his world to the public

There were times when architecture studio was so full of drafting tables to draw conceptual, schematic, or even working drawing by hand which took much time on its evolution to find what we called efficiency. Nowadays, the invention of CAD, Modelling software took over the line of production in Architecture firm. The changes was established by the need of time efficiency, costing efficiency, or even ease of transferring information between one person to another person or architect to builder or architect to other consultant which always involving techniques of creating architectural drawing or even nowadays architectural model [BIM]
An architectural drawing or architect’s drawing is a technical drawing of a building that falls within the definition of architecture. Architectural drawings are used by architects and others for a number of purposes: to develop a design idea to communicate ideas and concepts, to convince clients of the merits of a design, or even in the next stage to enable a building contractor to construct it, as a record of the completed work, and at the end to make a record of a building that already exists.
Architectural drawing become important because is consists of key information, such as the definition of space, all of the set of conventions, units of measurement and scales, annotation and cross referencing with material information or standard of construction. which described in floor plan, section, elevation. All of these information, now could be condensed in one architectural model [BIM = Building Information Model] which then creates minimum deviation in construction.
It’s all about sharing Tools of Design and Production in Architecture. which we should discuss the possible answer of :
1) What is and How history of Design and Production in Architecture evolve ?
2) What is needed for preparing a good architecture drawing or model information ?
3) How to establish bridge of information between architect – other consultant – builder ?
4) Why tools of design and production is important ? or what is the ethic to maintain good architecture drawing ?
my friend , David Hutama is chair department of UPH School of Design. After receiving his bachelor degree from Parahyangan University in the year 2000, he went to Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan, to pursue his master degree in History and Theory of Architecture. In 2005 he join Department of Architecture in Universitas Pelita Harapan. David was part of the steering committee team for Jakarta Architecture Biennale 2009 and Art Director for Rubber Wood Architecture Exhibition in 2010. In 2012 he worked as the curator of Place.Making Exhibition, an exhibition of Department of Architecture UPH at Dia.Lo.Gue Exhibition, Kemang. Together with Avianti Armand and Robin Hartanto co-edited ‘Home: a Studio Talk’, published by UPH Press. He was curator of Indonesia Pavilion in Venice Biennale 2014
